‘Love the art in yourself, not yourself in the art’

Stanislavki

Stanislavski was a Russian director who influenced many of the greats of modern theatre including Marlon Brando, Vivien Leigh and even the comedy actors of Friends. His ‘system’ is still used far and wide today. In our workshops, we draw on many of his techniques including finding an intention, using emotional memory, using objects to root your performance and dividing your piece into ‘beats’. This may sound complicated, but the aim of this work is to simplify your job as much as possible by connecting every moment to something concrete and real.

Working with text

Working with text

Multiverse workshops use pieces from plays as a starting point for developing vocal, physical and acting skills. At each workshop, you will have access to a range of plays from which to choose a scene, or you can bring your own piece to work on. We start the session with a warm-up, then go through the pieces, starting with a ‘cold reading’ (no expression) to get used to the text, then building in intentions and working on physicality, voice, visualization and other strategies to enable you to build a colourful peformance that feels easy and fun and works well on stage.

The text is a springboard for your performance. There is no ‘right’ interpretation of a piece – what will make your performance exciting is your ability to bring your unique perspective to that piece, and deliver it to the audience.

Storytelling is a great way to begin devising your own work. Our workshops can be used as a platform to try out new ideas, improvise and give your work to another actor to interpret.

Are you in the process of writing a play? It’s hard to know how your text will be translate into action without seeing it staged. You can bring your piece to one of our workshops to be dramatized and directed, to give you a sense of your writing in action.

Poetry can be a pleasure to perform, and watch. Modern poetry offers a wide range of emotional scope, from the darkness of Sylvia Plath to the comic genius of Pam Ayres.

An Empty Space…

In the famous words of Peter Brook, ‘I can take any empty space and call it a bare stage. A man walks across this empty space, whilst someone else is watching him, and this is all that is needed for an act of theatre to be engaged.’ Here at Multiverse theatre, we provide the ’empty space’ needed to create theatre now, in this moment, by anyone who would like to perform. We don’t believe that the magic of performance should be a holy grail rewarded to those who are lucky enough to get an agent, pass an audition or pay enormous fees for drama school. We believe, with Peter Brook, that the enchantement of a theatrical moment can happen anywhere there is an empty space, and a human being walking across it.
